I’m quite bad at posting photos of my work in progress and sketchbook studies to social media and I’m always taking photos on my phone as most of us do but never share them. I thought that it would be a nice idea to do a blog post once a month compiling some of the photos I take during a week or two that month so that I can look back on it and also share a bit more about myself. Eventually I’d like my Instagram feed to include more photos like these, however as i mostly just post my finished illustrations I’m always a bit apprehensive to post anything else.
This week started with quite a few storms and flooding across Manchester. There is an area where we often walk the dog which used to be a golf course which apparently had flooded quite badly so we put our wellies on and went for a very muddy walk.
In November I will be selling my prints at Manchester print fair and I had never had a stall anywhere before so when my mum had a stall at a nearby park (as she’s part of a local art group) and there was an empty table I was asked if I wanted to sell my prints there as a bit of a practice run. Luckily it was a really sunny day and even though the park was pretty quiet as it was a weekday I managed to sell quite a few prints which was really encouraging.
The floods have been really bad up and down the country and the week before I was really sad to see that one of my favourite illustrators, Ben Rothery’s studio had flooded really badly and all of his prints along with a lot of his original drawings had been ruined. It was great though to see how many people wanted to support him by buying his prints or sharing his shop (https://www.benrotheryillustrator.co.uk/shop/). I ordered a print myself of a clouded leopard (image below) that i’ve had my eye on for a while and i’m so happy with it and the quality of the print is great!
Apart from a couple of dog walks, the print stall and a few drinks at the pub one night I have been working on a lovely commission drawing ten different bird species alongside a project of my own. This week I illustrated a Lapwing bird and a Peregrine Falkon which i think is one of my favourite drawings to date.
One of the benefits to working on your own for large portions of the day is that you can listen to a lot of podcasts and music. This week I’ve been re-listening to the Ricky Gervais XFM radio shows which I think are hilarious and great to work to as there quite mindless listing. Music-wise I’ve been loving Sticky Fingers (‘Hyper’ and ‘Another Episode’) , Marlon Willians ( ‘Dark Child’ and ‘Vampire Again’) and I’ve been listening to Bon Iver’s new album (i,i) on loop. I think that my favourite song from the album is ‘Naeem’.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this post and if you have any suggestions on the format or if you think I’ve waffled too much let me know.
Thank you so much for reading as always :)
